Dealing with the Neighbor’s Unsightly Lawn

We know you take pride in a great looking lawn.  You invest a lot of time and maybe even a lot of money into making sure your grass is neatly trimmed, edged, fertilized and watered on a regular basis.  Unfortunately, not everyone has the same standard when it comes to yard maintenance, and it’s even more unfortunate when it’s the neighbor next door.

This is a tricky topic.  There is nothing more frustrating than working hard to maintain your beautiful yard and having it overshadowed by the neighbor’s knee-high, weed-infested grass.

What do you do?  Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer, but we do have some suggestions for you to consider and some things not to do, as well:

1)    Don’t mow without permission! Sure, you might be thinking, “I’m sick of this mess!  I’ll just mow the guys front yard really quick and be done with it — no big deal.”  Well… it could turn into a big deal.  Case in point:  Earlier this spring, a Florida man did this exact thing, and the result wasn’t pretty.  It turned into an all-out brawl, and the police were called.  So, lesson learned:  No drive by mowings!

2)    Talk to your neighbor. Ask another neighbor to join you for moral support and go talk to the guy or gal about their yard.  Who knows…maybe they travel a lot for their job, or they have a health condition that prevents them from mowing.  Or, maybe they just don’t care.  Whatever the case, offer to help, or suggest they look into a professional mowing service in Wichita like Lawn Enforcement. If you’re feeling extra generous (or desperate), you could always present them with a gift certificate.

3)    Explore City Ordinances or Neighborhood Covenants: Many cities and neighborhoods have ordinances that mandate the maximum height of grass you can have on your property.  Contact your neighborhood association or city for help.  The City of Wichita’s ordinance states that the maximum grass height is 12 inches and “violators will be subject to prosecution and assessment of costs for abatement of such violations.”   We recommend trying point #2 first before engaging the officials.

4)    Build a Fence: As the old saying goes, “Good fences make good neighbors.”  It seems like a drastic move, but if it reduces your stress, it just might be worth it.

Nation-Wide Poll Reveals America’s Take on Lawn Care

Consumer Reports is at it again.  The organization’s latest lawn care survey reveals that Americans have some interesting lawn care and lawn mowing perceptions and habits.

Poll findings we think are particularly noteworthy:

  • 32% found mowing relaxing, good exercise or nice private time
  • Most homeowners would trade part of their lawn for something else, including fake grass (12%)
  • Only 5% said they wanted to enlarge their lawn
  • 4% reported that they text and talk on the phone while mowing
  • 8% admit to boozing while mowing

Lawn-care is an activity that one must dress for, but according to poll results, many were dressed to kill, or at least injure themselves. Over three-quarters of respondents (77%) didn’t wear hearing protection, and over half (54%) wore shorts. Having close-toed shoes are also not a concern for 14 percent of Americans.

Tips for Safe Lawn Mowing When Kids Are On the Scene

All of us at Lawn Enforcement are sticklers about safety.  We want to remind you that lawn mowers can be dangerous, especially when kids are on the scene.

About a year ago, a boy in Indiana nearly died in a lawn mower accident.  The boy lost two toes and had to have extensive surgeries to repair damage to his leg. His father doesn’t want another family to experience the same pain, and is sharing a special safety message for parents everywhere.

His message:  “No matter what the circumstances are, no matter how bad a kid screams and hollers, don’t put them on the tractor seat with you!”

This is a critically important tip for all Wichita lawn mowing professionals and do-it-yourselfers to remember!

If you’re like me, you probably have fond memories of riding on the tractor with your dad or grandpa, and you want your kids to have those memories, too.  But, unfortunately, things can go wrong, and as the old saying goes, “it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Other things to consider to ensure a safe mow are:

  • Look behind you before putting your mower in reverse
  • Clear the yard of all debris and toys
  • Wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and eye and ear protection
  • Keep children at a safe distance

Be safe out there, everyone!  Do you have additional lawn mowing safety tips to share?

Consumer Reports Selects Best Lawn Mowers, Tractors & Trimmers

Most of our Wichita lawn mowing customers still own their own lawn and garden equipment, despite the fact that we take care of most of the work for them.  That is why Lawn Enforcement wants to share some recent research done on lawn equipment to help our customers and other Wichita lawn mowers make smart decisions when purchasing any new equipment.

Consumer Reports recently conducted its most comprehensive test ever on consumer lawn mowers and tractors.  Consumer Reports testers mowed 19.2 acres and identified more than 30 top-scoring models, including three models from Honda and Toro that retail for $400 or less.  The complete findings are published in the May issue, which can found in Wichita stores everywhere.

The report rates more than 100 mowers and tractors. Top performers include:

  • Black & Decker SPCM1936 — sells for $450.  This is one of the few cordless electric mowers with self-propelling wheels, a feature more typically found on gas models.
  • Craftsman 28856, a CR Best Buy at $1,600. This lawn tractor offers added agility plus impressive mowing for about $1,000 less than many zero-turn riders and $2,000 less than the four-wheel-steer John Deere X304 tractor.
  • Toro Super Recycler 20092 and Honda HRR216K7VXA — both retail at $500.  They cost $200 less than the top Honda self-propelled gas model and mow comparably.

The report also rates 30 string trimmers.  A few of the best picks are:

  • Black & Decker’s 24-volt NST1024 — sells for $140.  This is a battery-powered trimmer that cuts cleanly with one pass and performs adequately in taller growth.
  • Stihl’s FSE 60, $110, & Black & Decker’s GH1000, $70, top the plug-in category for overall performance.  They start with push-button ease and run as long as needed.
  • Echo and Stihl are tops among gas trimmers for fast, neat trimming and edging with the muscle to slice through 2-foot growth. The new Hitachi CG22EABSLP, $150, weighs less and did nearly as well in the tall stuff. Its heavier, 0.095-inch line also helped it trim all tall grass aggressively.

Lawn Enforcement of Wichita hopes you find this information helpful.  If you need a hand you’re your Wichita lawn mowing duties, please give us a call at 316-210-3644.
